Fever Business

LG Fashion Week in Toronto began this week with a flutter of pulses and a rise in temperature for the dizzy. I am covering the shows for Real Style and realstylenetwork.com, so last night I entered the ring (as circus comes to mind, not boxing ring). Beginning with ATTITUDE Jay Manuel- the silver-haired sweetheart showed the S/S 2012 collection to a crowded tent of media, designer guests and sponsors. I can only describe the collection as the "surprise vacation" wardrobe for the everyday, Sears shopping woman. If someone told you to pack your bags- but you didn't know if you were heading for a Safari, a cruise on a yacht in the Riviera, or a free-loving gypsy beach vacation. One part safari queen, one part glamourous St. Tropez beauty, one part boho gypsy sun worshipper...diluted down to wearability...that's this collection. Photos were taken with my berry, so don't mind the quality.

(And no, I didn't catch one of supermodel Yasmin Warsame's fall. Ouch.)
Joe Fresh show tonight,

In the twilight, of these white nights

Carte blanche, blank slate ...  monochromatic pales and shades of white took over the runway and my deepest dreams.  I keep being drawn to the lightest, brightest... whitest. Especially, the purely gorgeous white in  Calvin Klein's spring 2011 collection lately (above). On vaca, I found some amazing sheer button-up blouses at CK, including this white raw silk one, below.

There have never been so many ways to wear white. Ahhh. Makes me want the sunshine to hurry up, or at the very least, a free trip to the Riviera

You are all over my rainbow

Little is as jawdroppingly brilliant as a rainbow. But, then Spring comes...And it's arguable.
A blend of the beauty of Spring's intensity- and the intensity of  rainbow-hued colour-blocking- melt my winter soul.

never too many colours

Dior F/2010

Vogue rainbow fiesta-March 2011.

Dior did it extravagantly for fall 2010, then Gucci luxuriously spun the trend for Spring 2011. Now, Designers are keeping it up for fall 2011, like Gucci once again- this time in richer, ,deeper jewel hues.

Winter soul officially thawed,

Out with the new, in with vintage

The piece I mentioned I was working on for the Halifax Commoner takes a glance at vintage shopping in Halifax, and comes out tomorrow in print. Read it, and the whole issue, online @ http://thecommoner.kingsjournalism.com/.

Let's have a toast to the...

My coffee table. hmm, who can spot the matchers?
...non-neighbourly person responsible for this.
Ahh, apartment living. Just follow along with me as I swear under my breath. Tonight was laundry night- I have had $18 worth of quarters weighing down my purse for the past three days just waiting for the opportune moment to finally get my laundry done. Then tonight came.Wheee, I thought. It's like an arcade! And being that it's Monday, I'll have the laundry room all to myself to put my quarters in as I please, cha-ching, cha-ching.

lulu tops from every doorknob?ok.
Not so. I don't know the exact rules on laundry etiquette, but I'd wager my $18 that removing someone's clothes from the dryer while it's drying to put yours in is NOT acceptable. Concur? So the point of all this- and why all I can do is laugh- is that I now have 78 socks, 13 towels, 34 facecloths, and 54 items of clothing- all soaking wet- strewn across my entire apartment. (Which I had just cleaned.) Look, laugh, appreciate that it didn't happen to you and fingers crossed they dry. Hey, on the bright side- I don't have to fold.
Every raised surface is now home to apparel of all kinds.

Lovely diversions

Too much work and too little fun?
Lately I've been working really hard with school, work, writing, etc. Really back on the grind. I mean really, really on the grind- like coffee beans. Like teeth in your sleep. Like ... okay, you get the picture. Really working hard. Sometimes mid-week (or pre-mid-week) I just feel the need for a break, and some wine and girl time. One of my girls "M" has been working hard, too. January is the busiest time in her industry. Come Tuesday, both of us are usually in need of a night of fun. Which is why M and I decided to make Tuesday nights a weekly tradition. This week she's in Toronto for work, so we'll resume next Tuesday in our usual spot, the Hunt Club on Dresden.

Three words- Shopping. Wine. Deep fried pickles. That's five words, crap. See- working too hard! Even in down-time, there's always some research involved...recently did a piece on the bar/store for the Halifax Commoner.

Littlest activists

Thursday afternoon I went down to the rally for midwifery at province house, covering it and taking some photos. It was down right bone chillingly cold out and there were more sweet cheeked babies and adorable little ones than I could have imagined. Such little socially-aware protesters! Hundreds came to support changes to the current state of midwifery, namely, moving it out of the IWK. I spoke to organizers Stephanie and Jackie, whose hard work really paid off.
My favourite little supporter of all is a big fan of midwives. Above is one of my nephews Cole wearing his "My midwife helped me out" sign proudly.  He was born in 2009 under a midwife's care. Check out http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/health/Midwifery/ for more info on the current state of midwife care, as well as my recent article for the Commoner http://thecommoner.kingsjournalism.com/?p=5602
